NEW YORK: It is in the air that Motorola’s Droid Turbo will get Android 5.1 Lollipop update from the Verizon Droid line of handsets sometime in June of this year.
The insider, an engineer from Verizon, even posted a picture on his Google+ account showing his Droid Turbo running on the OS update, Droid Life reported.
According to test engineer Jose Arturo, the update will automatically upgrade the device’s current Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS to the Android 5.1 Lollipop. This means that it will be skipping Android 5.0 and head straight for the OS’ latest version.
Although this can be considered as a bit of good news for Droid Turbo users, the arrival of the update is a bit late considering that the device was released in October of last year.
Arturo explained that the delay can be attributed to Verizon’s nationwide HD Voice service. The engineer said the company is worried that the Android update might interfere with the device’s voice quality.
To avoid this, Verizon is taking its time in making sure that the update goes through all the necessary tests before it is unveiled to the public.
Arturo also noted that Motorola’s status in the consumer tech industry is also one of the reasons behind the late arrival of the updates for the company’s devices. Since it is not as big as other major competitors such as Apple or Samsung, Motorola oftentimes does not receive the timely financial support for its software tests, according to Android Authority.
“Motorola is small potatoes on budget compared to Samsung and Apple,” Arturo posted on his Google+ account. “Delays are usually due to funding for test verifications on new device software.”
Other than that, it could also be because Motorola is currently busy with its transition as a subsidiary of Lenovo after former parent company Google sold the former to the latter for $2.9 billion in late last year.
