KUWAIT CITY: MP Abdullah Al-Turaiji has recommended transfer of the General Customs Department from the Ministry of Finance to its Interior counterpart due to the increasing number of smuggling operations.

He pointed out the mounting tension in the region entails that Kuwait must tighten security on the ports, particularly since the number of drug-related cases and smuggling of weapons and other illegal items continues to rise at an alarming rate. He underscored the need for ‘zero tolerance’ in the borders.

Meanwhile, MP Talal Al-Jalal has asked the Interior Ministry to lay down a new strategy to intensify security measures, especially after the bombing of Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque which killed 26 martyrs. He asserted this strategy should protect the country and its people from terrorism. He said there must be a hotline that citizens can call 24/7 to report anything suspicious or anyone suspected of having sectarian orientation or extremist ideology. He stressed this is not the responsibility of the ministry alone, as it should be a shared responsibility among government agencies and civil society institutions. He then urged the ministry to secure places of worship and other structures like weddings halls, cooperative societies and government facilities.

He also asked the Information Ministry to launch an intense media campaign to promote the idea of social participation in maintaining national security, while the Ministry of Awqaf should instruct the imams to encourage the people to fully cooperate with the security authorities.

On the other hand, MP Mohammed Al- Barrak has presented a proposal for the Ministry of Public Works to re-asphalt the streets in Firdous. He disclosed most of the streets in the area have many potholes – big and small; unlike other places where the roads are in good condition.
