AMMAN: Prime Minister Hani Mulki on Thursday conducted a field tour of Aqaba, which included the container terminal, the new customs centre and the main port, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. During his visit, Mulki checked on the progress of inspection and clearance operations for goods in order to ensure they would not pile up like in previous years, especially during Ramadan.
Checking work at the containers terminal, Mulki urged all employees to work as best as they can to safeguard the terminal’s international reputation since it has become a major stop on international maritime trade routes. At the new customs centre, in Square 4, the premier said work this Ramadan is proceeding in a quick and orderly fashion; thus, containers are inspected and cleared on time.
At the Aqaba Port, Mulki was briefed by Aqaba Ports Corporation Director General Mohammad Mubaidin on the progress of work and the improvements under way. The prime minister called for completing the operations of clearing equipment and machinery to the new port in order to hand the land over to Eagle Hills Jordan, the company that will work on developing the area through real estate and investment projects.
During a meeting with members of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority’s board of commissioners, Mulki called for completing all legal measures related to rehabilitating and developing the Afran area, located at the heart of the old part of Aqaba, which lies some 330km south of Amman. He also called for enhancing cooperation with aviation companies to encourage regional aviation movement and stimulate tourism, in order to encourage tourists to extend their stay in Aqaba.
Mulki also visited Al Khaldieh Elementary Coeducational School, which was established upon a Royal makruma. He also met with residents of Rashideih area and listened to their concerns. During his tour, the premier checked on maintenance work at the King Hussein Bin Talal Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Aqaba.
