MULTAN: The Additional Collector Customs Adjudication has constituted a special committee for re-assessment of seized timber (Diyyar) on the request of the owner during a hearing of the case.
The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has seized a huge quantity of foreign origin Diyyar (wood) during its anti-smuggling action. The owner has presented the import documents of the confiscated wood for verification but the customs team impounded Afghan’s origin timber (Diyyar) on being bogus documents.
During the hearing, legal counsel raised the objection that inflated quantity of 230 meter compared to the physically quantity has been declared in the seizure report with a mala fide intent by the Customs Intelligence staff.
Additional Collector Customs Adjudication Talib Hussain formed a four-member special committee for reassessment. The committee has been directed to make a physical measurement of the total quantity of timber under the supervision of Deputy Director Customs Intelligence and Investigation Multan Office.
The Customs Adjudication has directed the Multan Dry Port Trust to provide the value along with the duty and taxes on the total quantity measured. It has been observed that the wood billets are universally measured in cubic feet meter and not measured in the square feet.
The Customs Intelligence has recovered 620 pieces of timber which contains net weight of 3,350 kilogram quantity, 2,480 square feet/230 M3 (Cubic meter).
The four-member committee will submit its comprehensive report in the next five days after the completion of the assessment.
