Multan Customs seizes smuggled goods worth Rs 14,936 million

 LAHORE: The Model Customs Collectorate Multan has registered over 65 times improvement in performance by seizing smuggled goods worth Rs 14,936.45 million till August of fiscal year 2014-15 as compared to Rs 227 million worth of smuggled goods seized in 2010-11, officials said.

Giving last five-year performance of customs anti-smuggling squad, officials said that smuggled goods worth Rs 227 million were seized in 2010-11, Rs 141.07 million in 2011-12, Rs 142.5 million in 2012-13, Rs 262.6 million in 2013-14 and a whopping Rs 14936.45 million in the on-going fiscal year 2014-15 till August.

Collector Customs Multan Sarfraz Ahmad Waraich, when contacted, attributed the remarkable achievement to improvement in command and control system by tightening it up further and bringing transparency besides close liaison of the higher officials with subordinate field staff and their direct supervision in filed operations.

He said that their last five-year performance includes 612 cases of smuggled vehicles; seizure of 178500 litres of high speed Iranian diesel; 271155 litres of oil containing grease; 100 bags of plastic granules; 72,000 Indian medicines (tablets); 61,269 cigarette packets; 103,945 meters silk cloth, 61 LED TVs, 65 tyres, 2,614 bags of tea, 3,750 bullets of air gun, a large number of cell phones, undeclared fabric and other goods. All these cases were sent to the trial courts for prosecution, Waraich said.
