Multan Enforcement enhances surveillance on Railway cargo to curb smuggling

MULTAN:  In a bid to curb rising smuggling activities, the Multan Customs Collectorate Enforcement Multan, under the direction of Collector Muhammad Farrukh Sharif, has intensified surveillance on Pakistan Railways’ cargo operations. The decision follows a significant increase in smuggling attempts using railway cargo trains as a covert channel to transport illicit goods.

Recent investigations by the Customs Enforcement Multan Anti-Smuggling Teams revealed that smugglers are exploiting the country’s railway network, disguising contraband goods under legitimate cargo. The items, ranging from non-customs paid dry milk and betel nut to foreign ghee, oil, chocolates, candies, and other goods, were intercepted in a raid at a railway warehouse. The seizure, a major success for the Customs Enforcement, underscores the growing challenge faced by authorities in tackling the smuggling network operating through the railway system.

Further inquiries by the Investigation and Prosecution Department of Customs Enforcement Multan disclosed a troubling trend. Smugglers have been booking large consignments of illegal goods disguised as legitimate items, often using fake identification cards or the personal details of deceased individuals to complete their transactions. This modus operandi has raised serious concerns over the security and integrity of the logistics sector, particularly in relation to the use of railway cargo for smuggling operations.

In light of these developments, the Customs Enforcement Collectorate has placed greater emphasis on tightening controls and enhancing operational procedures. Collector Muhammad Farrukh Sharif has directed his anti-smuggling teams to formulate a more effective strategy to detect and prevent smuggling attempts. A dedicated squad has been assigned to monitor railway cargo operations, with a focus on improving coordination and ensuring that all consignments are thoroughly vetted.

The Collectorate’s crackdown is part of a larger effort to stamp out smuggling in the region. With smuggling increasingly becoming a cross-border challenge, Multan Customs Enforcement, under the leadership of Collector Sharif, has made it a top priority to disrupt smuggling networks and ensure that Pakistan’s trade routes are secure and compliant with customs regulations

Authorities are confident that with enhanced vigilance and improved detection techniques, the ongoing fight against smuggling will see positive results, contributing to the broader goal of protecting Pakistan’s economy from the damaging effects of illicit trade.
