MUMBAI : On Wednesday, the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Mumbai Police revealed that it has seized drugs that value more than 12.5 crores in 2015. As per Dhananjay Kulkarni, spokesperson, Mumbai Police: “Around 18,445 cases have been registered by the Anti Narcotics Cell regarding drugs peddling in the city and around 20,032 people have been arrested since January 2015.”
“Around 698 kilograms of drugs has been seized in the whole year of which ‘Ganja’ tops the list as around 423 kilograms of the same worthing 45.2lakhs has been recovered so far,” he added.
Heroin stands second on the list at around 233.7 kg and amounts to Rs 7.4 crore. After Heroin and Ganja, comes Charas – weighing about 24.1kgs and worth around 29.5 lakhs. Around 1.3 kg of Cocaine values Rs 85.5 lakh has been seized, making it fourth on the list. Close to 16 kg of Mephedrone (MD) worth around Rs 3.2 crore was also seized. Ganja is considered most easily available at cheap rates.
Jayant Naik, DCP, Anti Narcotics, said Ganja comes to the city mainly from Nashik and Andhra Pradesh with the eastern suburbs being affected the most. He also claimed Columbia as the biggest source for Cocaine in the city. “Mostly the informers help us to decode drug codes if any and also the Social Media Lab and the Cyber Wing of Mumbai Police keeps an eye on any online dialogue on drugs,” said Kulkarni.
