NA body recommends separate budget defence production

RAWALPINDI: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence Production has recommended allocation of a separate annual budget for the Ministry of Defence Production.

It observed that provision of funds to the departments such as the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) should be timely and sufficient because they were producing defence equipment.

Khawaja Sohail Mansoor chaired the committee meeting. Muhammad Khan Daha, Amra Khan, Iffat Liaquat, Bhawan Das, Ayesha Gulalai, Asiya Nasir, Bilal Rehman, Sajid Hussain Turi, Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Defence Secretary Lt-Gen (Retd) Syed Muhammad Owais and KSEW Managing Director Rear Admiral Syed Hassan Nasir Shah attended the meeting.

Under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), he said, the shipyard needed an upgrade and help in the Ship Lift and Transfer System.

The minister for defence production highlighted the role of the PSDP in provision of budgetary resources for development projects at the KSEW. The meeting also discussed establishment of a shipyard at Gwadar deep-sea port in context of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
