NAB forms committee on FBR to combat corrupt practices

ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has constituted a Prevention Committee on Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) to identify loopholes in taxation rules and regulations and procedures of Bureau.

As per directives of Chairman NAB, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, the Committee has been formed under Chairmanship of Deputy Chairman NAB and would recommend measures to plug heavy leakages caused through corrupt practices.

The committee comprises serving and retired senior taxation officers, private sector, Transparency International, State Bank of Pakistan and other stakeholders.

The Prevention Committee has the mandate to focus on loopholes of those laws, rules, regulations and procedures of taxation which are misused and given rise to corruption and mal-practices. The Committee will also identify systematic weaknesses and propose measures for stopping leakages and evasion of government revenue. Further, the Committee may refer observations of glaring corrupt practices and the incidents of corruption to the enforcement Division of NAB.

As per details provided by NAB here on Wednesday, the Committee will submit its report in 180 days to Chairman NAB in form of recommendations formulated for consideration and execution by FBR and relevant departments.

The Committee is authorized to seek full and complete assistance for all or any documents and information relevant to subject matter from any department, Federal Government, Provincial Governments, Financial Institution, Person or Authority as enunciated in NAO Sec 27.

On the basis of recommendations, the Chairman will form Implementation Committee under NAO 33-C (e).
