PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has nabbed four contractors for supplying 353 voltage stabilisers to different water supply schemes at inflated rates, causing a huge loss to the national exchequer.

Sources said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa NAB officials arrested the contractors of Public Health Engineering Department allegedly involved in supplying stabilisers at Rs102 million to water supply schemes through a deal, which was a gross violation of procurement rules.

The arrested contractors were identified as Abdul Wahab Butt, Ishfaq Ahmed, Syed Azam and Mudassar Rai, owners/co-partners of M/S Ittehad Enterprises Peshawar. The NAB produced the accused before the accountability court, Peshawar, and got eight days physical remand from the court.

The NAB claimed that a complaint was received to this bureau that a former chief engineer of Public Health Engineering Department unilaterally and illegally standardised three firms for purchase of voltage stabilisers.

The approval of the Provincial Standardisation Committee was not obtained. The firms were M/S Ittehad Enterprises, M/S Bismillah Engineering and M/S K.B Engineering. The NAB claimed further arrests were expected as inquiry was in progress.
