ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday summoned former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal in a probe related to alleged misappropriation in the Narowal Sports City case.

Iqbal, who has to present himself in NAB’s Rawalpindi office on Wednesday, is accused of causing losses worth billions to the national exchequer by initiating the Sports City project in his home constituency.

According to sources, Iqbal is accused of starting the project – worth Rs3 billion– illegally. Pakistan Sports Board is also accused of illegally using its authority for the construction of this project.

The accountability watchdog’s summon for Iqbal comes a day after PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) for drug possession. PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and senior leader Saad Rafique are also currently in jail on corruption charges.

Last year, NAB had announced that it would initiate a probe into alleged violation of rules in the construction of the National Sports City project just a day after its inauguration by President Mamnoon Hussain.

The anti-graft watchdog in a statement said it had received a complaint that the Narowal Sports City was constructed at a cost of approximately Rs6 billion which was a violation of rules.
