WASHINGTON: The National Publicity Secretary, National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Mr Stanley Ezenga has supported the Federal Government’s decision to reduce the number of agencies in the country’s ports. Ezenga told newsmen in Lagos yesterday that the presence of too many agencies at the ports was affecting ports’ efficiency due to unnecessary bureaucratic delays.
“We do not support the presence of too many agencies at the port because we believe there will be bureaucratic delays and operations will not be as efficient as expected. “What we believe can work better is for these agencies to be invited when they need to do some businesses at the ports. “That way efficiency would not only be ensured, there would also be some order at the port,’’ he said.
The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Ports Quarantine Services and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) are some of the agencies affected by the government directive. SON Director-General, Dr Paul Angya called for the re-entry of the agency into the port at a forum recently, saying it would help address the problem of substandard goods coming into the country. He said it would be more efficient if the goods were tracked at the ports instead of chasing such goods after they had left the ports.
