CANADA: Glass deposits could hold key to past life by trapping organic molecules for thousands of years.
A startling discovery on Mars has once more raised the possibility of past alien life on the Red Planet.
Scientists at NASA have discovered glass deposits inside craters that were formed when meteoroids and comets slammed into the planet in the distant past and superheated the surface.
Here on Earth, glass deposits have been used by geologists to study past life because of their ability to trap organic molecules.
Now researchers believe they may be able to do the same thing with the samples found on Mars.
“This preservation – as confirmed here across the planet – provides a means to trap signs of ancient life on the accessible Martian surface,” wrote Kevin Cannon and John Mustard, the two planetary science researchers responsible for the find, in the journal Geology.
Cannon and Mustard were able to find the glass by measuring the spectrum of light bouncing off Mars’ surface with NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
