NEW YORK: Tested by a holiday to space? Well you might be after seeing Nasa’s vintage-style travel posters for three recently discovered planets.
The space agency have created a series of holiday style adverts for newly located planets Kepler-16b, Kepler-186f and HD 40307g to introduce the public to some of the recent discoveries made by its Kepler Space Telescope which spotted its 1,000th exoplanet last week.
Orbiting a pair of stars Kepler-16b is described as being similar to the fictional Star Wars planet of “Tatooine” where Luke Skywalker grew up, complete with double sunset.
For its poster Nasa has envisoned Kepler-16b as a terrestrial planet but it is possible that it might also be a gas giant like Saturn. Nasa say prospects for life are not good on this planet as temperatures are similar to that of dry ice.
The first Earth-size planet discovered in a potentially ‘habitable zone’ around another star, Nasa believe water could exist on Kepler-186f’s surface.
This planet is described as cooler and redder than our Sun and scientists believe that any local plant-life’s photosynthesis process could have been influenced by red-wavelength photons.
