NEW YORK: NASA recently released 30 minutes of the sun in incredible 4K resolution. With this video, astronomers and astrophysicists can piece together detailed mechanisms found within the sun. There have been previous videos of the sun but nothing close to this resolution in 10 different wavelengths. Best of all, NASA has released the full 234GB video to the public!
The project began in 2010 by the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) to observe and record solar activity, including solar flares. The video was captured using an Atlas V-401 rocket, which took an image of our sun every 12 seconds from October 14th to 30th, 2014. NASA was able to record 10 simultaneous wavelengths and is composed of 17,000 images in total.
The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) were used to image the sun. Each of the 10 wavelengths recorded from the aforementioned instruments represent different temperatures of the sun’s material from the surface to the corona.
