PARIS: NASA researchers have flown a light plane into the ground in a test of aircraft black boxes.
The most recent test, which involved dropping a Cessna 172 onto a stretch of hard-packed dirt, is the second in recent month’s by the space agency.
The aim, NASA says, is to find out if Emergency Location Transmitters (ELTs) work as they’re supposed to in the event of severe – but survivable – crashes. So long as a crash isn’t catastrophic, a working locator can be the difference between survival and death.
The data from the test will be used by NASA and black box manufacturers to work out how to install locators that stand the best chance of working after a crash.
