NEW YORK: Ceres is now getting its own personal pictorial from NASA’s Dawn spacecraft. Earlier images sent back by the craft caused some speculation as two bright and shiny spots were fueling the imaginations of scientists and story tellers alike.
It’s no surprise that the craft has dedicated some of its resources into learning what these spots are in hopes of learning more about the planet.
The speculation over them ranged from people saying they were ice to people hoping that the spots were signs of life, perhaps even primitive intelligence.
NASA officials have killed the mood though. Their statement reads as follows: “The view shows numerous secondary craters, formed by the re-impact of debris strewn from larger impact sites. Smaller surface details like this are becoming visible with increasing clarity as Dawn spirals lower in its campaign to map Ceres.”
They added that “The region shown here is located between 13 degrees and 51 degrees north latitude and 182 degrees and 228 degrees east longitude. The image has been projected onto a globe of Ceres, which accounts for the small notch of black at upper right.”
