NATO/ISAF pilferage case: Defence ministry seeks details from Directorate General of Transit Trade

KARACHI: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sought a detailed report on investigation made by Directorate General of Transit Trade in US Army, NATO/ISAF cargo pilferage case so far.

The Directorate General of Transit Trade is likely to furnish the requirement of the MoD in a day or two, it is learnt here.

Earlier, the Defence ministry in a letter to customs has asked for the details of non-military cargo that was pilfered during transit via Pakistan. It may be mentioned here that the Directorate General of Transit Trade has established a case wherein 22 containers of US Army based in Afghanistan containing power generators were pilfered. These goods were to be shipped to Dubai.

DG Transit Trade Khawar Fareed Manika, Director Wajid Ali and his new team under the leadership of Deputy Director Fazal Dad Chaudhry pursued the case efficiently and the investigation is progressing at a swift pace.

In this regard a number of arrests have also been made by the investigating team and the entire ring has been exposed.

MoD has sought all the details of the pilferage of non-military cargo and the sources suggested that there could be government-to-government level discussions in this regard.

Moreover, the director general of Customs Intelligence had also made cases regarding pilferage of good off 8 containers of NATO/ISAF forces in Afghanistan. This was a crime of heinous nature as hazardous waste was pilfered and dumped into the country.

Director General Customs Intelligence Lutfullah Virk and the team led by Additional Director Nadeem Ahsan pursued the case without any influence and also made important arrests. Sources claimed that both the directorates have been given free hand and advised to take no external or internal pressure or influence of any kind in this regard and take the cases to its logical end.
