HONG KONG: There is a need to bring a decline in the level of global greenhouse gas emissions. It has been said so as research being led by US Geological Survey (USGS) biologists has found that if the levels would not go down then polar bears’ population suffer extremely.
If nothing much is done to reduce the levels of atmospheric pollutants then it will impact the polar bear population in Alaska and other places. Polar bears use floating ice as platforms for hunting their prey, for mating and also to travel great distances. They try and save their energy on swimming long distances.
In 2008, the bears are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. The researchers have used new models to predict greenhouse gas levels under different circumstances. On the basis of that the researchers have affirmed that things are going to be quite difficult for polar bears in the next many decades.
Ecologists said that the danger will persist even if things get better at climatic front. According to the research, if the emissions are not reduced that the number of bears in the Arctic ice cap will decline significantly in 25 years or may be earlier than that.
“Substantial sea ice loss and expected declines in the availability of marine prey that polar bears eat are the most important specific reasons for the increasingly worse outlook for polar bear populations”, said study’s lead researcher Todd Atwood, USGS research biologist.
