KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City seized over 500 kg of rotten meat from fresh houses in Sundhara. The inspection team had raided fresh houses run by Salam Ansari and Sakim Ansari at Sundhara ward no 22 and tested the samples. Out of five meat shops run by the Ansaris, three were found selling inedible meat.
KMC has started inspection of meat shops and eateries from Monday onwards. The inspection team had probed 10 meat shops and six fish shops today. Kathmandu has around 2,500 meat shops and around 1,000 fish shops, and 90 percent of shop owners have been selling the meat and fish items without basic hygiene.
The monitoring team said that rotten meat was being supplied to various restaurants, guest houses and party palaces inside the valley. “Some portion of rotten meat was kept in the open to sell and when we inspected further, we found rotten meat kept inside big fridges,” said Bimala Khanal, president of Forum for Protection of Consumers’ Eye Nepal, who also participated in the inspection.
Speaking to the Post, Khanal said, “I request all the consumers to be more cautious as other meat shops might be following same unethical suit.”
Hari Kumar Shrestha, head of the KMC’s Urban Health Division, said the seized meet has been sent to the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control in Babarmahal and the remaining rotten meat has been destroyed.
The existing Meat Inspection Act and the Food Act have not been implemented effectively despite meat shops owners selling unhygienic products neglecting the public health.
The inspection team had probed eight meat shops, two fish shops and one sweet shop in Anamnagar, New Baneshwor and Old Baneshwor, and found out that all of them were selling unhygienic produces to consumers.
