KARACHI: A group of officers posted at Port Qasim Collectorate had been involved in mega corruption for the last one year, Customs Today has learnt.

According to sources, a group of appraising officers, including Appraising Officers Naeem Khan, Khalid Parwaiz and Asfandyar, along with some examiners, misused the authority by helping importers to evade millions of rupees government taxes.

“Usually, the examining officers take photographs of consignments and also write their own reports and send the same to the appraising officers who again check the photographs and reports and process the goods declaration accordingly to clear the imported consignments after receiving duties and taxes. However, the network of corrupt officials, including Appraising Officer Naeem Khan, made it a habit to ignore the photographs and proceeded the goods declaration on the basis of the reports written by the examining officers which were mostly wrong and tampered,” an investigation officer told Customs Today on the condition of anonymity.

It is pertinent to mention here that, on the direction of Chief Collector Abdul Rasheed Shaikh, the Custom Intelligence Unit of Port Qasim Collectorate was investigating a mega tax evasion case in which servo motors were imported under the garb of sewing machines.

Reports revealed that three apprising officers, including Appraiser Naeem Khan, Appraiser Khalid Parwaiz and Appraiser Affandyar were involved in huge corruption and supported M/s Eman Enterprises in tax evasion of Rs 13 million.
