ISLAMABAD: The federal government is planning to launch a new money transfer system for overseas Pakistanis and striving to end hawala and hundi, Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed told Senate Standing Committee on Postal Services.
Addressing the session at the parliament house, Minister for Communications said that a new system was being introduced for expatriate Pakistanis to remit money to their country and matters in this regard had been finalized with State Bank and National Bank.
Murad Saeed observed that electronic money order, same day delivery and other services had been started while the infrastructure of post offices was being improved.
Promising to make Pakistan Post into a profitable institution by the end of current year, Saeed said that 15,000 offices were being opened across the country with the assistance of NADRA.
He declared that Pakistan Post would be a delivery partner of larger markets and after CPEC it will have a major share in the logistics. Saeed stated that by March there were chances of investment of one billion dollars through the logistics company.
Meanwhile, Director General Pakistan Post Naseer Ahmed Khan informed the panel that the export parcel service “EMS Plus” had been initiated in six countries and the facility would further be extended to other countries by February.
Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi said that with the launch of the service, people must be given confidence that their parcels would not be lost.
Senator Mirza Muhammad Afridi said that despite claims, he received his parcel five days late to which minister for postal services said a special cell had been formed to address complaints.
The minister noted that Pakistan Post was facing many issues which his ministry was trying to resolve at the earliest.
DG Pakistan Post said that senior citizens would not have to wait for pension as their data had been computerized and they would receive money in two-and-a-half minutes.
The senior official noted accounts of 1.3 million pensioners have been computerized whereas the data of 3.8 million saving accounts was made online.
