New Doom is as violent as hell

TOKYO: Bethesda has revealed the first gameplay from id Software’s reboot of classic first-person shooter Doom. And it is violent as hell.

The footage had a tooled-up space marine pirouetting through a Mars facility with a thunderous shotgun, blasting holes in demons in fast-paced and gory combat. Blood and giblets splatter the screen, while our hero has a mean line in melee attacks, like bashing a demon’s face in with its own dismembered leg. Subtle, it’s not.

The visuals are spectacular though, with spitting fire, detailed environment and terrific use of light. It is the first game to use id’s new ‘id tech 6’ engine and will also feature an intriguing level creator called SnapMap. SnapMap allows players to build their own maps by bolting rooms and corridors together, after which you can customise your level with your own objectives. So you can build Horde-style co-op levels, say, or maps and game modes for Doom’s arena combat multiplayer. You can then share your creations online.

The multiplayer will also come with modes such as Domination and Freeze Tag, and favours vertical movement and power-ups. The game is the latest for a series that was hugely influential in making the FPS such a popular genre. The last game in the series, Doom 3, was released in 2004. This new title was originally called Doom 4, before id went back to the drawing board to reboot the series for the new generation of consoles.

id is making Doom for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and are targetting a Spring 2016 release.
