BERLIN: Porsche will show off a new Boxster Spyder in the coming year, Volkswagen Group chief Dr Martin Winterkorn has revealed at the company’s Investor Conference.

Winterkorn said the the new model will be just one of 50 new models planned across the Volkswagen Group’s 12 brands in the year ahead.

While many of those are likely to be updates and new variants in existing lines, Dr Winterkorn highlighted the the new Audi Q7 and A4 ranges, the Volkswagen Touran, the updated Porsche 911 range and the new Boxster Spyder.

Little is known about the new Spyder, although fans can undoubtedly expect the same focused and lightweight formula that made the 2009 model so popular.

Importantly, the new Boxster Spyder’s debut will give droptop fans an even more ‘track ready’ option, beyond the current GTS, joining hardcore hardtop models like the new 911 GT3 RS and Cayman GT4.

The new Spyder may even utilise the same GT3-based powerplant that beats away in middle of its Cayman GT4 sibling, delivering similar levels of performance in the process.
