WASHINGTON: A new study says that mosquitoes seem to bit some people more than others. The reason for this difference lies in human genes.
Researchers from the University of Florida have identified particular genes they believe are resppnsible for producing smells that mosquitoes like. The new study confirms several previous sudies that say that mosquitoes suck blood from one person rather than another.
Researchers say that identical twins were found to attract the same level of attacks from mosquitoes.
A total of 18 identical and 19 non-identical female twins were examined in the study. Dengue mosquitoes were placed inside of a tube shaped like the letter ‘Y’ that had two end covered by the hands of twins. The tunnel allowed insects to choose between one member of the pair or the other.
Not only were the specific odours attractive to the insects but it also appeared to repel the creatures. Researchers discovered that heavier people were more attractive to mosquitoes. Similarly pregnant women were found to be attractive to mosquitoes than the women who were not carrying children.
