Fiji Ports Terminal Limited is formulating a new traffic flow system at all its shipping ports in a bid to comply with Occupational Health & Safety and International Standard Organisation regulations.
This is the at the top its priority list aside from its productivity and efficiency targets, says operations manager Nabeel Ali.“We are finding it difficult to monitor the vehicle movements around the yard which is very dangerous,” Mr Ali said.
“While our operations require us to move around the yard, we have made designated walking paths for those who wish to go from one point to another.”These go-to and no-go areas will be strictly observed by Fiji Ports Terminal staff members, the securities, shipping agents and other stakeholders.
The system come as management has noticed the careless and reckless behavior of some stakeholders who are being complacent about safety issues, he added. “We need to address this. We call on all stakeholders from agents to truck drivers to abide and respect the system for their own safety.”
In a lot of instances, truck drivers pull over at undesignated areas and leave the engine running while out of the vehicle. Mr Ali said this was unacceptable. Heavy machinery and equipment are present at ports and it would be remiss of management not to address this issue, he added.Designated customer parking has also been allocated.
Fiji Ports Terminal will be doing a two to three-week awareness programme on the traffic flows system which will be gradually rolled out.
