SYDNEY: The next-generation Fiat Linea undergoes tests in Europe. The successor to Fiat’s sedan for developing markets will, employ the SCCS platform from the Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FAC) group that currently underpins the Fiat 500L, 500X and Jeep Renegade models.
Currently, it is still unconfirmed as to whether Fiat will choose to retain the Linea name as the Italian automaker is planning to position the new car up a rung or two markets in Western Europe have been earmarked for this new model.
Aside from a sedan body style, the new Fiat Linea is also expected to spawn a hatch and estate variant further on in its life cycle. All three models are slated to be produced by Tofas, a joint-venture between the Fiat Group and Koç Holding, in Turkey.
Under the hood, expect a range of engines/gearboxes to be carried over from the Fiat 500L and 500X. Diesel options will most likely be represented by the 1.3 and 1.6 litre MultiJet II engines while the gasoline engine choices will likely include the 1.4 litre, turbocharged MultiAir mill.
As part of Fiat’s aggressive plan to increase global sales, a total of 580,000 units of the new Linea has been touted for annual production. On top of that, Fiat plans to pile on the production numbers with an additional combined total of 120,000 units comprising of the hatch and estate versions.
