SYDNEY: The debut of the 2016 Lexus RX has again been linked to the Detroit Auto Show, which throws its doors open next month.
Edmunds is the latest to suggest the RX could be unveiled in a matter of weeks, along with Lexus’ BMW M5 fighter in the GS F.
This follows a similar report from last month, and has prompted independent artist Theo Chin to imagine how the new RX may look.
In this rendered image (top of page), the next-generation RX isn’t a dramatic departure from the model it replaces with front styling dominated, as usual, by Lexus’ ‘spindle’ corporate face.
Side-on, the rendering suggests a de-styled affair for 2015, again based on the Harrier SUV offered in Japan – just as previous generations of the RX have been.
Key features include smaller rear-view mirrors no longer mounted to the doors, and a less-chiselled side profile.
Of course Lexus may have decided to go in the opposite direction by adding even more chiselled lines to the next RX, bringing styling into line with the smaller NX SUV.
Lexus has remained tight-lipped about the next RX, with potential ‘details’ on the new model – including light-weight, high aluminium content – mainly fed by the rumour mill.
It’s believed Lexus dealers in the US have demanded a seven-seat version in line with customer demand, but Lexus is still in two minds over the issue.
Dealers were also reportedly unhappy with Lexus’ decision to pursue a production version of the LF-C2 concept rather than concentrate on the RX, prompting a potential rethink from Lexus over its future plans for the model.
