Nigeria Customs destroys N13.5m worth of smuggled poultry products

ABUJA: The Seme Border Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized and destroyed N13.5 million worth of poultry product being smuggled into the country.

The destruction during the week was done through burial, after pouring caustic soda on the products to hasten decomposition and deter scavengers from digging them up for sale or consumption.

The exercise was witnessed by officials of Ports Health Service, Agricultural Quarantine Service, DSS and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Comprising 1,805 cartons, the poultry products were in addition to bags of expired flour and used textile materials intercepted while being smuggled into the country from Benin Republic.

Also in the government warehouse, were recently seized consignments of sugar, paints, rice and other trade goods.Meanwhile, the new Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Ndalati Garba Mohammed, has urged traditional rulers, chiefs and members of border communities to join hands with the Customs to fight smuggling and other related crimes.
