Nigeria customs join hands with NESREA to enforce Environmental Laws

ABUJA: The comptroller-general of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Ali (Rtd), has assured the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) of its commitment towards enforcing environmental laws in line with the organisation’s mandate.
This is even as he called for stronger ties with NESREA to fast track the enabling environment to make Nigeria cleaner and safer adding that the task of achieving sustainable development required a collective responsibility from stakeholders.
The Custom boss, who disclosed during his visit to NESREA headquarters in Abuja, yesterday, commended NESREA’s effort in sanitising the environment just as he lauded the existing platform for collaboration and open communication.
On his part, the director-general of NESREA, Dr Lawrence Anukam, reiterated that NCS’ partnership has improved the environmental control in Nigeria which he believed led to the establishment of the National Toxic Dump Watch programme to checkmate suspicious movement and shipment of hazardous wastes into Nigeria likewise the Seaport Environment Security Network (SESN) aimed to promote international good practice for environmental inspection at Seaports.
He added that the partnership also contributed to the registration of importers of Used Electrical Electronic Equipment (UEEE) otherwise known as end-of-life to prevent Nigeria from being used as dumping ground, sensitisation workshop on E-waste to stem the increasing incident of illegal shipment of e-waste into Nigeria as well as the Risk Assessment Template Development and the Harmonised ICT coding system amongst others.
Anukam hinted the Custom’s boss on the need to quickly regulate illegal traffic in endangered species of fauna and flora saying that Nigeria was increasingly becoming a transit route for traders.
A statement made available to LEADERSHIP and signed by the chief press secretary of NESREA, Mr Sule Oyofo, also quoted the NESREA boss as saying that Nigeria was cooperating with the international community including INTERPOL for effective networking and timely exchange of information and experience on environmental compliance and enforcement issues.
