Nigerian Customs impounds 26 Containers over false declaration

ABUJA: An importer is in trouble with the Nigeria Customs Service following discoveries that 26 containers ladened with new tyres were falsely concealed and imported into the country.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali has ordered the immediate seizure of the consignment warning that all falsely declared goods remain confiscated.

TVC News Correspondent, Ifunanya Eze reports that the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali at the inspection of the containers assessed the duty lost on the seized cargoes to more than 116 million naira or $363,000.

He says the importer who is a beneficiary of the customs fast track facility has abused the process by falsely declaring paper boards and machinery. And has vowed that justice will be done.

The incident has already triggered new rules. The Customs management has issued a new set of directives to importers and agents.

For those involved in fraudulent transactions and those planning to, the Nigeria Customs Service insists their will strict enforcement to affirm its zero tolerance to non compliance and other trade infractions.
