WELLINGTON: A joint operation between New Zealand, Fiji and Australia has stopped about $80m worth of methamphetamine from reaching its final destination.

New Zealand Customs, Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority, and Australian Federal Police worked together to stop about 80kgs of the class A drug from reaching Fiji.

The stash was found hidden inside car parts in a sea container sent from South America. The container was intercepted and examined by New Zealand Customs at the Ports of Auckland last month. Following enquiries by Fijian authorities, a Fijian national was arrested.

Customs Investigations Manager Maurice O’Brien said this was a great example of international law enforcement agencies working together to target the illicit drug trade, and jointly protect borders and communities in the South Pacific region.

“It is very satisfying to play a part in this operation and stop this large amount of methamphetamine making it onto the streets.

“Sophisticated criminal syndicates set up drug supply chains across countries and take big risks for big profits. We’re pleased this significant seizure will hit them hard in the pocket.”
