TEHRAN: A direct shipping line between Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas in Iran and Oman’s Sohar Port was opened on Thursday. The ceremony at the port terminal was attended by Isaac al Busaidi, representative of Omani foreign investment organisation in Iran, Saleh Daryanaward, deputy for planning in Hormozghan province, second Admiral Hussein Azad, commander of the first maritime zone in the Iranian navy, senior managers in the general directorate for maritime and shipping and other officials from both countries.
Ahmad Shirzadegan, Secretary-General of Iran-Oman Chamber of Commerce, said the opening of this new shipping line, owned by a private sector Iranian company, marked the beginning of a historical move in the political geography of the region. He said the launching of the new shipping line is a part of a comprehensive agreement reached between Iran and Oman in early spring 2015 which includes making investments, construction work and banking transactions as well.
Ganaveh, the first refrigerated cargo ship set out towards Sohar in Oman after the ceremony. The Secretary General said in the ceremony that the volume of Iran-Oman trade in the year 2013 was around $877 million which showed 72 per cent increase compared with 2012.
He predicted that the figure with a giant leap will reach $4 billion within the next two years.
Abdolhossein Khedree, the Executive Manager of Khedree Jahan Darya private company, said in a year the marine Silk Road will be revived. He said the new shipping line is the result of growing commercial ties between Iran and Oman during last years.
