Online gaming grows 50% during 2Q 2016 in Spain

MADRID: Online gaming grew by more than 50% year-on-year in Spain in the second quarter of 2016.

In figures released by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) for the three months to June 30, the nation’s gross gambling revenue (GGR) increased by 56.3% compared to the same period in 2015 to €98.8 million. However, the figure was around 3% down on the first quarter of 2016.

Total handle was up 33% on Q2 2015 to €2.7 billion, with that figure also increasing by 3% compared to Q1 2016. Sports betting made up 49% of total handle and 54% of GGR, with casino at 36% and 28% and poker at 14% in both metrics. In terms of revenue, casino grew by 10% compared to the previous quarter, with betting up 1.5%. However, poker (-8%) and bingo (-10%) both experienced a decline.

There were 671,000 active players during the period, which was an increase of 16% on Q1 and 75% year-on-year. Advertising spend by operators during the second quarter was €29.8 million, which was a decrease from the previous quarter of 9% and an increase of 56% year-on-year.
