LAHORE: The World Environment Day was observed in Azad Jammu Kashmir on Friday like other parts of the world with the renewal of the pledge to make an all-out effort to protect the environment.
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care”. “Increased population across the globe is a grave threat to the environment through different means,” speakers including environmental experts observed at a seminar held here on Wednesday. The seminar was hosted by the state-run Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Mirpur division in collaboration with various local non-profits.
Earlier, a walk by the people from diverse segments of the society including lawyers, journalists, teachers, students and the social workers was taken out in Mirpur to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by the environment on the planet. The walk started from Shaheed Chowk Mirpur and culminated at a hotel wherein the seminar was held to commemorate the day.
The speakers included Divisional Director Environmental Protection Agency Mirpur Div. Sardar Idrees Mehmood and other environmental experts. They said that the theme was enjoined upon the humanity to continue consuming far more natural potential than the planet can sustainably provide. The speakers emphasised a need to focus for achieving the goal of quality of life by avoiding environmental degradation, and not compromising on the needs of future generation.
