According to Gujranwala Division Excise Director Ashiq Hussain Shah, as many as 200,000 applicants had applied for computerised number plates in all the six districts – Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Gujranwala of the division. He added they had deposited Rs 90 million in this regard in 2012.

He said that on the directions of the Punjab government, the department had contacted the applicants to get their number plates. He said that only 125 applicants have so far responded.

Some applicants said that they were reluctant to contact the department as the procedure of issuing and getting the number plates was complicated and time consuming.
