SYDNEY: Optus has introduced Family Sharing for data. The shared plans will hedge data costs by allowing a parent or their child to tap into the unused data of another family member, said Vicky Brady, the managing director of marketing and product at Optus Australia.

“Currently around 68% of our My Plan customers are using less than 50% of their monthly data inclusions. We know that 18-20 year olds use 2.7 times more data than those over 45 years old.

Each Optus Postpaid plan – the $40 (with 500MB), $60 (with 3GB), $80 (with 6GB) and $100 (with 10GB) plan also includes unlimited SMS and MMS to 32 countries:

Austria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA and Vietnam.

The $40 plan has no included international minutes, but the $60 plan has 150 international minutes while the $80 and $100 plans offer 300 minutes of international calls to the 32 countries listed above.

You can also buy extra ‘international minute pack options’ for $5 giving you 50 minutes or $10 giving you $150 minutes if you need more calling time to those 32 countries. If you need to call a country not on the list, Optus has its international rates on this page.

You can see the details of each new Optus ‘My Plan Plus’ here, as well as the phones you can choose from, all charged at an extra per-month rate on top of the plan depending on the phone you choose.

Optus MD of Marketing and Product, Vicky Brady bunched up her thoughts and said: “We believe there are around one million households who would want to sign up for Family Sharing. All families have different data needs, with some people in the house using more than others. Now customers can combine all the mobile plans in their home on the same bill and make the most of their data.

“Currently around 68% of our My Plan customers are using less than 50% of their monthly data inclusions. We know that 18-20 year olds use 2.7 times more data than those over 45 years old. With our new Family Sharing offer, these customers can pool their data so that heavy and light data users can maximise their mobile plans and consolidate their bills.”
