SYDNEY: Optus has switched on tri-band carrier aggregation in suburbs of Newcastle, NSW. The telco revealed is had achieved speeds of up to 317 megabits per second using a combination of 1xFDD + 2xTDD channels on the 2300MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands.

People in Lambton, Mayfield and Mayfield West can now use the technology — once they get a hand on a Category 9 device, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

“Aggregating 1x FDD + 2x TDD carriers on a commercial network with a commercial device is a world first for Optus,” Dennis Wong, acting managing director Optus Networks, said in a statement.

“It is a more efficient use of our spectrum bands and will provide a more consistent and better experience for our customers.”

The telco said it would switch on the technology in Melbourne’s CBD early next month and Sydney’s CBD in early 2016. It will be switched on in Adelaide and Brisbane in mid-2016.

Optus already offers 2x carrier aggregation in parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin as well as some regional centres.
