ISLAMABAD: Approximately 50,732 tax and customs-related cases worth around Rs5.7 trillion are currently pending in various courts and tribunals across Pakistan, leaving a significant portion of national revenue tied up in legal disputes, according to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) sources.

The data shows that the largest number of cases are pending in appellate tribunals, where 27,621 cases worth Rs3,383 billion are under adjudication.

At the level of collector adjudication, 2,155 cases involving Rs58.3 billion are pending, while collector appeals are dealing with 322 cases worth Rs46.3 billion.

Sources further revealed that the Supreme Court is hearing 3,961 tax and customs cases involving Rs184 billion.

In the Lahore High Court, 8,232 cases worth Rs977 billion are pending, while the Sindh High Court is handling 5,521 cases involving Rs558 billion.

Similarly, the Islamabad High Court has 2,210 pending cases worth Rs492 billion. The Peshawar High Court is hearing 528 cases involving Rs28 billion, while the Balochistan High Court has 186 cases worth Rs8 billion pending.

Officials say the backlog of cases continues to delay revenue recovery and places a major burden on the national exchequer, as large sums remain locked in prolonged legal proceedings.
