ISLAMABAD: Preparations for Pakistan’s 2027 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) report have begun, with the Karachi Desk starting to compile the country’s performance report for the upcoming assessment.
On the directives of the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), a three-member Karachi Zone Desk headed by the deputy director crime has been formed to oversee the process.
The Karachi Zone Desk has started collecting and compiling relevant performance data for Pakistan’s FATF team ahead of the 2027 report.
The desk was established on the orders of the FIA director general and comprises three members, with the deputy director crime serving as its head.
10 units working on FATF preparations
Across Pakistan, 10 specialized units are working under the FATF Desk to prepare the required report and assess progress under the relevant action areas.
These units include the Risk Analysis Unit, Investigation Monitoring Unit, Financial Intelligence Unit and International Cooperation Unit. Other specialized units include the Interagency Coordination Unit, Seizure Unit, Forensic Unit and Virtual Assets Unit.
The coordinated work is aimed at compiling Pakistan’s performance and ensuring that relevant information is available for the upcoming FATF assessment.
Pakistan’s previous FATF progress
Pakistan had successfully completed all assigned tasks under the 2018 and 2021 FATF Action Plans, marking significant progress in strengthening its systems against money laundering and terror financing.
Following completion of the required tasks, Pakistan was removed from the FATF grey list in 2022.
The preparation of the 2027 performance report is now being undertaken as part of Pakistan’s continued engagement with the FATF framework.
