Pakistan builds first LNG terminal in record time of 335 days with $135 million

ISLAMABAD: The first state of the art Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal was built at a cost of USD 135 million in a world record time of 335 days.

In a landmark step by the government, it was the first terminal completed in shortest period of 11 months, which was a record in world’s history.

Senior official of ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources told APP that normally a terminal takes around three to four years to complete and become operational, but it was the hallmark of the present government to set up the country’s first LNG terminal in just 11 months.

“The first imported gas was added in the national system and it will be beneficial for domestic and industrial consumers,” he said.

Terming it a milestone in the history of the country, he said with the import of LNG, there would be decrease in load shedding as initially it would be used to overcome electricity shortage.

He said that initially 200 mmcfd (million cubic feet per day) LNG was injected in the system, adding that till May it will be increased to 325 mmcfd and later it will be enhanced to 400 mmcfd.

He said that the government approached all those countries those have LNG reserves but initially Qatar which is one of the biggest LNG exporter would provide LNG.
