Pakistan, Italy discuss trade, investment promotion issues

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD), an institute under Ministry of Commerce will sign MoU with a fashion school Polimoda of Italy on footwear designing and accessories.

This was decided during a meeting with Italian vice Foreign Minister, Benedetto DettaVedova, and prominent Italian investors who called on Federal Minister for Commerce, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan on Tuesday.

Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan informed Italian delegation that on the direction of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, a Treaty Implementation Cell has been set up to ensure close coordination with provincial governments for implementation of the conventions at grassroots level.

They also discussed avenues to establish institutional mechanism to enhance mutual trade and investment between the two countries.

The two sides also agreed to provide institutional foundation for strengthening trade and professional linkages between the two countries through Joint Business Council and interaction between Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry with Italian counterparts.

Affiliation of PSFD with Polimoda of Italy was also proposed by the Pakistani side.

The two organizations would work together to transfer knowledge and student and faculty exchange programmes, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce here.

It was informed in the meeting that Italy is Pakistan’s third largest export destination within the Europen Union after UK and Germany and the bilateral trade volume between the two countries stood at US $ 1.22 billion in 2013-2014.

Pakistan’s main items of export are cotton fabrics, woven made-up articles of textile materials, articles of apparel, chemicals, leather products and cotton yarn.

Major items of import from Italy include machinery and its parts, cereals and cereals preparations, medical and pharmaceutical products and wheat.
