KARACHI: The government has decided to purchase a spot cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) issuing a tender seeking bids from international suppliers.
According to PLL, international companies have been invited to submit bids for the LNG cargo by Tuesday, with the offers scheduled to be opened the same day.
The state-owned company has sought delivery of the LNG cargo between September 4 and September 8.
The decision to enter the spot LNG market comes as Pakistan seeks to manage its immediate gas and energy requirements.
LNG plays an important role in Pakistan’s energy mix, particularly in meeting demand from the power sector, industries and other consumers when domestic gas supplies are insufficient.
Spot purchases allow buyers to secure LNG for relatively immediate delivery instead of relying solely on long-term supply contracts.
However, prices can fluctuate significantly depending on international demand, weather conditions and developments in global energy markets.
Pakistan has faced periodic constraints in gas availability, which can also affect electricity generation at power plants dependent on gas or imported LNG.
The tender will therefore be closely watched for the price offered by international suppliers and the eventual cost of securing the September cargo.
PLL is responsible for procuring LNG from international markets to meet the country’s requirements.
The bids received under the latest tender are expected to determine whether Pakistan can secure the required cargo within the short delivery window of September 4-8.
