KARACHI: Pakistan has unveiled a groundbreaking policy to promote electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its sustainable transportation initiative. In a significant move to accelerate EV adoption, the government has dramatically reduced import duties on electric vehicles and their components.

Speaking to media, Engineering Development Board General Manager Asim Ejaz revealed that import duties on electric vehicles and motorcycle parts have been slashed from 30% and 15% respectively to just 1%. This substantial reduction in EV import duties marks a pivotal shift in Pakistan’s transportation policy.

“We are actively working to make advanced electric vehicle technology more accessible to the public,” Ejaz stated. He acknowledged that while previous concerns about EV reliability had affected consumer confidence, Pakistan now has access to significantly improved and more dependable electric vehicle technology.

The policy board emphasized that this initiative aligns with global trends toward sustainable transportation. As countries worldwide embrace electric mobility, Pakistan’s transition to EVs is expected to yield significant economic benefits, particularly in reducing the nation’s substantial fuel import expenditure.
