KARACHI: Pakistan’s total debt burden has reached nearly Rs84 trillion, with the country’s overall debt rising by 7.4% year-on-year by June 2026, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.
According to the State Bank, the country’s total debt stood at Rs83,642 billion in June 2026, compared with Rs77,888 billion in June last year. The total debt had been recorded at Rs81,955 billion by May this year.
The data showed that the federal government’s domestic debt increased by 9.1% year-on-year to Rs59,441 billion, while the federal government’s external debt rose by 3.3% to Rs24,201 billion.
Experts have warned that the rising debt burden on the country could become a “debt trap” for the economy.
