NEW YORK: A new study published at the Royal Society Open Science revealed that parasites can encourage cannibalism on some animals. According to the researchers, they observed that adult shrimps infected with Pleistophora mulleri were more likely to eat their young ones as compared to uninfected adults.
Shrimps are occasional cannibals according to experts but the chance of becoming once is higher when they are infected with the said parasite. Pleistophora mulleri, the parasite in question is small, about the size of a human red blood cell. It gets into the shrimp’s muscle and they can flood the host in millions. When there are millions of these parasites, it can damage the muscle of the shrimp and to meet its needs, the adult shrimp will eat more including its young ones.
