HONG KONG: The Perseids meteor shower is expected to peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning, Aug 12 and 13. But you should be able to see meteor activity for a couple nights leading up to the peak.
The annual Perseids meteor shower reaches its peak later this week, and we could be in for one of the year’s best meteor shows — as long as the weather cooperates.
A waning crescent moon means less moonlight and better chances of seeing more meteors this year.
Astronomers are predicting meteors Tuesday, Wednesday and into Thursday morning. The peak — the time when the most meteors are visible — is expected to be Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
You could see as many as 50 meteors an hour at the peak, said Patrick Young, an associate professor at Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration. Shower activity really picks up around midnight, he said. The best viewing is in the early-morning hours, he said. But you should be able to see some meteors in the evening as well.
“It’s worth going out in the evening, even if you can’t stay up late,” he said.
