SEOUL: Peruvian shipments to South Korea have increased by almost 35% after the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, Peruvian Ambassador to Seoul Jaime Pomareda informed.
On the matter, he explained that in 2010, before the Peru- Korea agreement entry into force, Peruvian exports to that country grew to US$896 million. In 2014, three years after the FTA entered into force, exports of Peru to Korea totaled US$1.2 billion.
In statements to Andina news agency, the diplomat informed that the sectors that have experienced the largest rise in exports were [non-traditional] agriculture, [traditional and non-traditional] fisheries and steel industry.
Pomareda went on to add that products such as quinoa, maca and kiwicha can enter the Korean market, which operates a sector that is quite interested in their intellectual development and invigorating properties.
Fishing products such as eel, cuttlefish, prawns and mollusks are being acquired in large quantities by this country. Likewise, coffee, table grapes and organic bananas are being increasingly consumed by the Korean population.
The Ambassador thinks that organic chocolate and mangoes’ potential in Korea might be as significant as that of the fine fiber industry (alpaca, vicuna). Pomareda will take part in the Road Show Asia 2015 organized by Peru in Seoul. The event was previously held in Tokyo, Japan and will also take place in Beijing, China on September 11.
