LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) continued a crackdown against untreated wastewater irrigated vegetables crops and discarded 2,524 Kanal of vegetables in 27 districts of the province.
According to a spokesman, food safety teams under the supervision of DG PFA Noorul Amin Mengal raided vegetables fields across the province and also took action in the provincial capital’s fields, and discarded 630 Kanal vegetables.
Sewerage, industrial waste and other poisonous water was being used for the cultivation of vegetables.
DG PFA Noorul Amin Mengal informed the media that after mapping, the PFA had put fields of poisonous water in red zone and in these fields the department had banned to grow vegetables in these areas. The department was also taking help from SPARCO to find these fields and farmers were also being given awareness about the issue, he added. This was the fourth phase of the crackdown and during three phases more than 20,000 Kanal vegetables have been discarded.
