ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a cabinet meeting gave directions that all obstacles in the way of speedy electricity generation should be tackled to reduce load-shedding.
The meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy took place at the Prime Minister House, where Nawaz Sharif said that the government’s priority is to increase electricity generation in the short-term, to add additional electricity to the national grid by summer of this year.
“In the long term, efficient projects should be undertaken to reduce load-shedding and providing electricity to people at affordable rates,” the premier remarked.
Pakistan’s unfavourable high cost energy mix lies at the core of the energy crisis. The widening gap between the high cost of thermal power and the regulated electricity prices aggravated the present crisis.
The premier further said at the meeting that alternate sources of energy including solar and wind power must also be tapped to reduce dependence on any one source.
Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif along with Foreign affairs adviser Mr. Sarjaj Aziz, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Mr. Tariq Fatemi and Minister of State for Petroleum Mr. Jam Kamal were in attendance of the meeting. Ministers for Water and Power, Petroleum, Planning, Finance, Railways were also present at the meeting.
